Free VA Claims Resources for Veterans and Families
Every veteran deserves to know the no-cost options available — apply directly, find an accredited VSO, or reach urgent support.
Veterans do not need a lawyer or paid representative to apply for VA benefits. Free assistance is available through VA-accredited Veterans Service Organizations including the DAV, VFW, American Legion, and others. Apply directly at va.gov/PACT at no cost.
1. Apply directly — VA.gov
- VA.gov/PACT — PACT Act overview and application
- File a disability claim (Form 21-526EZ)
- Intent to File (Form 21-0966) — locks your effective date
- VA healthcare eligibility
2. Free VSO help — accredited representative directory
VA-accredited Veterans Service Organizations represent veterans at no cost. Find one near you:
- VA accredited VSO directory
- Disabled American Veterans (DAV)
- Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)
- American Legion
- Military Order of the Purple Heart
3. Veterans Crisis Line and urgent mental health
Call 988 and press 1. Or text 838255. Free, confidential, 24/7. Available even if you are not enrolled in VA healthcare.
4. Why "Intent to File" timing matters
Filing an Intent to File (Form 21-0966) preserves your effective date for back pay. You then have one year to complete and submit the formal claim. This single form can mean months of additional benefits.
5. Try the eligibility screener
Not sure where you stand? Our PACT Act eligibility screener asks a few questions and points you toward the right next step.
