FAQ

Can I Work While Receiving VA Disability Compensation?

Generally yes. VA disability compensation is not income-based and is not affected by employment, with the exception of Total Disability based on Individual Unemployability (TDIU). TDIU recipients must report substantially gainful employment, which can affect the benefit.

Standard VA disability compensation is paid based on the rating percentage assigned to your service-connected conditions, not on your income or employment. A veteran with a 70% rating receives the same monthly amount whether they earn nothing or earn a six-figure salary.

TDIU is the exception. Veterans receive TDIU when their service-connected conditions prevent them from securing or maintaining substantially gainful employment. Because the benefit pays at the 100% rate based on the inability to work, TDIU recipients must report substantially gainful employment to the VA. Sheltered or marginal employment generally does not affect TDIU.

Substantially gainful employment for TDIU purposes is generally tied to the federal poverty threshold for a single person. Earning above that threshold in non-sheltered employment can trigger a TDIU re-evaluation. The rules are nuanced — confirm with a qualified representative before relying on this summary.

VA disability compensation is also separate from Social Security Disability Insurance and other federal programmes, each of which has its own work-and-income rules. A veteran can generally receive VA disability and SSDI simultaneously, subject to the rules of each programme.
